Sleep better, naturally…


I read a news story recently that made me very sad. Sleep and anxiety pills are contributing to hundreds of deaths in Australia each year, according to a report released in August by the Penington Institute, which also highlighted that:

  • Drug deaths in Australia have hit a record high, at 142 fatalities a month, according to a report released in August by The Penington Institute.
  • Annual drug deaths almost doubled in the decade to 2016, in which more than 13,000 people lost their lives as a result of unintentional drug overdose. Drug deaths have overtaken our road toll.
  • Legal pharmaceutical drugs are the leading killer, though most people are dying with a combination of substances in their systems, one dangerous combination is prescription painkillers, sleeping tablets and alcohol (each one of these alone can depress the respiratory system).

It is mind-boggling and utterly devastating, isn’t it? 

I used to always have a packet of Temazepam handy, to help break the sleep deprivation cycle when life got stressful.  I found my last packet a few weeks ago, it still had three tablets left.  I looked at it for a good minute or so as I pondered whether I really needed to keep it, but I couldn’t even remember the last time I had one, so I gladly threw it in the bin.

I used to be one of those people that would lie awake for a good hour or so, or sometimes hours, trying to get to sleep.  I’ve always been a very light sleeper, guaranteed to be woken by the slightest noise.  However, recently my housemate commented about a car alarm that had gone off outside my window at 2am, I didn’t believe him, because I didn’t hear a thing!

What’s my secret?  Lavender and Frankincense essential oils my friends.

Essential oils love fat, and our bodies are made up of fat, so when you mix these with a carrier oil and apply topically it carries the essential oil molecules into your bloodstream so they can do their magic.  It’s rare now for me to be lying awake more than half an hour, and I get a much deeper and more restful sleep.  Oh, and I don’t wake up feeling groggy like I did after a Temazepam.

All essential oils are not created equal and the importance of using a high quality, 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oil, cannot be underestimated if you want this blend to have the desired effect.

What you will need:
10ml coloured glass roller bottle*
8** drops lavender essential oil
8** drops frankincense***
Fractionated coconut oil

* I recommend coloured glass because it doesn’t allow sunlight in, which destroys the therapeutic benefits of the oil. Metal roller balls glide on more easily than plastic ones.

** This dosage is for adults. For babies, use 1 drop essential oil to 10ml carrier oil, and children aged 2+ use 2 drops.

*** You can use lavender on it’s own if you don’t have frankincense, or substitute with/add Vetiver or Roman chamomile, which are also great for sleep.
