For months I’ve been on a mission to find a great bulk foods store on the south side.  As if by magic,  The Source Bulk Foods has opened within a stones throw of the Prahran market, sending local health foodies into a flurry of excitement.

The store is lined with wall-to-wall containers with just about every health food you can imagine. Who knew there were so many things you could do with the humble almond?  From flaked, roasted, blanched, activated and slivered, to organic and non-organic, you name it – they’ve got i t.

There’s trail and salad mixes, mueslis, Paleo energy balls, pasta, beans, rice, spices, raw cacao, shredded coconut, stevia powder, barley grass, rice malt syrup, organic honey, apple cider vinegar, cooking oils and a whole lot more, including organic cleaning and bath products.  They’ve won me over with $5 per kilo epsom salts.

If you like to experiment in the kitchen but don’t want to spend a fortune on ingredients you’ve never heard of, here you can buy whatever quantity you like.  How does it work? It’s easy! Scoop the amount of product you need, write the product number on the bag, take it to the counter and pay by weight.

What’s more, The Source Bulk Foods prides itself on being waste free and environmentally friendly. It’s plastic bag free, and you’re encouraged to bring your own containers, bags and bottles.  Talk about novelty! It makes ridiculous amounts of sense though, doesn’t it?

Melbourne husband and wife duo, Terry and Brenda Teh are the ones you need to thank for bringing this concept to our wonderful city.  They first came across The Source Bulk Foods in Byron Bay and left their jobs in mining and finance so they could make health foods more accessible to more people.

With six stores now operating on the east coast of Australia, I dare say it’ll only be a matter of time before we see a second one opening in Melbourne.  Here’s to hoping!
